Sir George Collier's Squadron in Penobscot Bay, 14th August 1779
New!
The British had seized and fortified Bagaduce, Maine (present-day Castine) in June 1779. A counter-expedition consisting of some 17 warships, 20 transports and 1000 troops was mounted by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and this arrived on 24th July, penning three small British warships and the garrison into Castine.
But the Americans were not ready to mount their final attack before 13 August, and on that evening a powerful British squadron arrived under the command of Sir George Collier. Here we see them the following morning, sweeping up the bay from seaward, Cape Rosier at left. From left to right the ships are
Galatea, 20 guns,
Blonde, 32,
Camilla, 20, the flagship
Raisonable, 64, the ex-American
Virginia, 28, and
Greyhound, 28.
