“Return to the Mediterranean - Nelson’s Squadron, May 1789”
Early in 1798 there were no British warships at all in the Mediterranean, and anxiety over the whereabouts and movement of the French fleet based on Toulon prompted the dispatch of Rear-Admiral Nelson with a small reconnoitring squadron consisting of the 74-gun ships Vanguard, Alexander and Orion, and the frigates Emerald, Terpsichore and the sloop Bonne Citoyenne. Pleasant weather during the first fortnight of May was followed by a violent storm from the 20th to the 22nd, which left the Vanguard dismasted. Nelson's squadron refitted itself and, reinforced by ten further ships of the line, went on to track down and destroy the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile.– Geoff Hunt.Oil on Canvas, signed lower left.
