Lulworth and Shamrock racing off the Needles. August 1929.

The picture shows the decisive moment in the Royal Victoria Yacht Club’s “Round the Island” race for “Big Class” boats, in August 1929. With the rest of the Fleet, which included White Heather 11, Cambria and Candida, left well behind, Lulworth and Shamrock battle for the lead as they pass the Needles rocks with the lighthouse perched on the end. Once round, in calmer waters, Lulworth pulled ahead. Shamrock fought hard to stay in contention, but at the finishing line off Ryde, still trailed by 41 seconds.
