Jenny Morgan writes: This painting depicts a race that 'shouldn't have gone ahead' because it was blowing hard on that day, but the yachts decided to make a race of it, the new Endeavour partly to test out her sails and rigging before challenging the America's Cup later.  She also sailed without reefing her mainsail, as seen here, and subsequently was dismasted.  Rame Head can be seen in the distance, together with Lord Runciman's schooner who towed the Endeavour back into Plymouth.  The Velsheda also lost her mast - quite a common occurrence for the big J-Class in those days...
