Farewell, Cape Farewell - the Whaler sails for Home - Jenny Morgan RSMA

The scene is set off the southern tip of Greenland, Cape Farewell, during the latter part of the 19th century.  The ships are the sturdy-built Boston whalers, the nearest vessel setting sail for the long voyage home after many grueling months in cold hostile seas hunting the whale, mainly for the valuable oil, rendered down from blubber aboard in the so-called 'try-works.'

During those days whale hunting was considered a necessity, but now, happily for most countries, we see little need for slaughtering these fine animals.
