HNoMS Sleipner was a Royal Norwegian Navy Destroyer, commissioned in 1936, and named after Odin's eight-legged horse.  She survived a sustained attack by Luftwaffe bombers following the German invasion of Norway in April 1940 and won a place in Norwegian hearts as an ‘unsinkable ship’; her image was used on wartime Norwegian stamps.

Sleipner later went into exile, serving as a convoy escort along the UK North Sea Coast. She was converted to a Frigate in 1948 and was decommissioned in 1959.

This painting was used to illustrate the cover of the book The German Invasion of Norway April 1940 by  Geirr H Haarr
