The fine incoming brigantine is one of the commercial sailing vessels built on Prince Edward Island, Canada, largely for British owners.  The painting is the artist's depiction if a typical late nineteenth-century scene when sail still reigned as the best way of moving freight around the coasts and seas.

The Cardiff-based pilot boat is one of the legendary Bristol Channel pilot-cutters, known for their rugged build and the heroic seamanship of their crews, the pilots, who guided ships safely in and out of the treacherous waters of the Channel or Bristol Channel.

Some of these doughty craft still exist, after restorations enjoying life as safe cruising vessels.
