The Falmouth Packet Walsingham in the Fal - 1823 - Roy Cross RSMA

The Falmouth Packet Walsingham in the Fal - 1823 - Roy Cross RSMA

The forerunners of the famous Falmouth Packet Service dated back to 1689 were civilian vessels by the 1800s and operated by the British Royal Mail. Well-armed and well-found to carry the mail, state dispatches, etc. to continental Europe, Ireland, the Americas, and the West Indies.

Walsingham was one of the later ‘standard’ ships introduced in the 1790s. Here she is seen returning from Malta in 1823 commanded by Lt. John Bullock.

Many of the Packets were brig-rigged, but Walsingham is a three-master, seen passing Castle Point on the far shore of the Fal estuary.
