"To paint marine scenes you've got to be a sailor. You've got to feel how the wind moves, how it affects the sea, and how it affects the boat. You've also got to know the rules of the road! Otherwise, it is impossible to build a technically correct painting. Every painting to me is an adventure - setting the mood of the sky and thus the mood of the painting - but there are no shortcuts - it is 5% inspiration and 95% sheer hard work."
