Fireships on the Hudson River. Night attack on HM ships Phoenix and Rose, August 1776 - Geoff Hunt

In July 1776 the British sent a small squadron into the Hudson River, consisting of the Phoenix, 44 guns, the Rose, 20 guns, and two small tenders. On the night of August 16th, the ships were at anchor when two vessels were sighted nearby. Their crews were seen setting fires and abandoning ship — the American rebels were using fireships, the most feared form of attack against combustible wooden warships.
