The British frigate HMS La Nymphe with a sister ship, perhaps Clyde, Indefatigable or Triton and a cutter (either Lurcher or Joseph, pushing in towards Brest to gain intelligence and test and annoy the blockaded French fleet.

This beautiful and historic painting captures the tension of the tactical position, with the French fleet drawn up across the harbour entrance (Detail 2).  You can see the lookout atop the mainmast (Detail 1) perhaps shouting news of the latest French position...
